What to look for... |
Before going to see a new house or apartment for the first time, it is always a good idea to make a list of things you're looking for.
At the start of this list, you need to put the things you must have. Things on this part of the list should include essentials, such as location, number of bedrooms, room size and facilities (such as a washing machine, microwave or dishwasher). However, top of the list here must be your maximum price, the absolute top monthly price you are prepared to pay in rent. This is one of the few things you must not compromise on, no matter how good the house or apartment might be.
Secondary features on this list can include, proximity to local shops, satellite TV, car-parking and other features which are desirable but not essential.
It is up to you to decide which of these (if any) are important to you, and to decide if they are essential or merely desirable.
In a situation where you are undecided, or a (prospective) landlord is trying to sway you, referring to this list can sometimes prove invaluable in making a decision one way or another. More often than not, this list will dissuade you from an unsuitable property with a few good features, rather than convince you to take a property that you feel is just not right.
At the end of the day, this is a decision on your future home, and you have to live there. If you really need persuading, it's not right for you.
